What is swinging?

Swinging is a term started generations ago to describe the practice of couples engaging in sexual activities with other couples or a single person. It is typically referred to as a "lifestyle." This is a committed relationship choosing to engage strictly for recreational purposes with an outside party. There are many reasons why couples engage in the lifestyle. Swinging can improve intimacy, increase arousal, and improve the overall health of the relationship.

Although other relationships may have this practice it does not mean they are swingers. I am referring to polyamory, open relationships, throuples, and even friends with benefits who may or may not engage in "swinger" practices.

It is important to note that swinging is not for all relationships and the impact on the relationship can be catastrophic if trust, intent, communication, and boundaries are not clear and followed.

Why Therapy?

Explore potential impacts to the relationship by discussing:

  • What the lifestyle involves
  • Level of trust and insecurities
  • Intent: reasons for participating, what do you hope to gain
  • Consent: clear and understood
  • Boundaries: what can and cannot happen
  • Unexpected or unforeseen sense of betrayal
  • Is the relationship benefitting from the lifestyle
