What Can Trauma Look Like?

  • Verbal, psychological, physical, or sexual abuse at any point in your life.
  • The absence of a parent growing up, whether through separation, divorce, abandonment, or death.
  • A guardian, parent, or sibling who struggled or currently struggles with addiction.
  • Witnessing another person's trauma, such as domestic violence, injury, or a crime.
  • Being bullied, ridiculed, ignored, or manipulated.
  • Any situation that made you feel helpless and threatened.

Trauma is anything that overwhelms the brain and affects it's ability to cope.

People Often Dismiss the Magnitude of Their Experience in Order to Cope. Unfortunately, Not Processing Trauma Can Manifest Itself in Other Ways.

  • Lack of energy
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Increased conflict with others
  • Chronic, unexplained pain
  • Anxiety
  • Fearfulness
  • Isolation
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Hopelessness
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Compulsive and obsessive behaviors
  • Impulsive behaviors
  • Irritability and hostility
  • Emotional numbness
  • Overreactions, including sudden outbursts of anger
  • Hyper-vigilance and jumpiness
  • Social withdrawal
  • Substance abuse
  • Violent behavior
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Re-experiencing the trauma with intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares

You Are Being Presented With Two Choices, Evolve or Repeat.

Processing trauma is not easy. The experience itself is difficult. Often times we fear the emotions it generates if we revisit those memories. The only way to move forward is to move through it. There are different ways to process trauma. Whether by psychoanalysis (talk therapy) or EMDR therapy.

It's not just about what happened to us.

The narrative of the event is what influences the way we feel about ourselves. Naturally, our brain will find a way to cope with the trauma, but sometimes that coping mechanism is not always a healthy one. It can include blaming ourselves, minimizing the impact, and sometimes convincing ourselves we deserved it. I work with clients to explore those narratives and replace them with rational thoughts that make sense to help you move forward.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy

EMDR therapy is a phased, focused approach to treating trauma and other symptoms by reconnecting the traumatized person in a safe and measured way to the images, self-thoughts, emotions, and body sensations associated with the trauma therapy, and allowing the natural healing powers of the brain to move toward adaptive resolution. I offer EMDR therapy right here in Dallas.

What does it look like?

The technique has different forms such as tapping, following lights, or hand movements with your eyes, while processing traumatic memories. The purpose of stimulating bilateral eye movement is to help the brain and body process the experience. EMDR therapy requires a 2-hour session.
